Cyber security for small businesses

Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting internet-connected systems such as hardware, software, and data from cyber-attacks.

It is used by individuals and businesses to protect against illegal access to data centers and other computer networks. An effective cybersecurity strategy can provide a strong security position against an attack designed to modify, erase, destroy or extort an organization's or user's systems or sensitive data.

Any potential access point should have several layers of defense. This provides a layer of protection for linked networks, hardware, software, and data. All employees within any organization who have access to any of these endpoints must receive adequate training on the appropriate security and compliance procedures.

Small businesses can often be the target of cyberattacks due to limited defenses. Breaches can lead to financial loss, reputation damage, and legal issues for the company.

Below, are some steps that small businesses can use to ensure safety :

  • Educate employees on safe practices and phishing. Ensure staff members remain vigilant to strange emails and ensure they are using strong passwords to computer systems.

  • Secure networks, making sure to use firewalls, antivirus software, and encryption. This will alert the user when possible risks occur and safeguard systems in the background.

  • Update systems on a regular basis. Older versions of the software allow hackers more time to learn how to break into the system.

  • Make regular data backups of important files. In the event that a hacker erases the data, backing it up will ensure that it still exists somewhere on the cloud.

  • Limit access. Only key personnel should have access to certain data. Payroll should only be accessible to accountants and password control should be limited to the IT department. Managers should be allowed certain access on a need-to-know basis.

What are the costs of these measures? The benefits will outweigh the costs.
  • Antivirus software - > €200 per year per computer.
  • Cloud storage - > €500 per year
  • Managed security services - around 1000€ per month
